Accidents and illnesses can occur unexpectedly, making it essential to have proper health insurance during your stay in Hungary. Health insurance ensures that your medical expenses are covered in case of sickness or injury. It is also a mandatory requirement for obtaining a residence permit in Hungary. The insurance must provide comprehensive coverage, including emergency treatments and non-life-threatening medical issues, as life or accident insurance alone does not suffice.
Generali Studium Health Insurance
The University offers students the opportunity to purchase Generali Studium Health Insurance. In certain programs, the tuition fee already includes this insurance (please check with your Faculty for details). The Generali Studium Health Insurance, valid in Hungary, provides full coverage for medical treatment costs within the insurance scope and covers 50% of the costs for medication and therapeutic aids.
Health Insurance for EU Citizens
Students from EU-member countries are entitled to free emergency medical care or necessary treatment during their stay abroad if they hold a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). However, as the EHIC offers limited coverage, we recommend EU students also consider adding the Generali Studium Health Insurance for more comprehensive support.
Health Insurance for Governmental Scholarship Holders
Governmental scholarship holders are entitled to access Hungary’s public healthcare system through the Hungarian Health Insurance Fund. These students receive a Hungarian social security number (TAJ) and a TAJ card, which provides full access to public healthcare services.
Additional Options
Students can also opt for international health insurance from any company of their choice to complement their coverage in Hungary.
Medical Services in Szeged
In case of emergencies, call an ambulance at 104 or go directly to the Emergency Room (SBO) at 6725 Szeged, Semmelweis utca 6. For non-emergency situations, it is highly recommended to register with a General Practitioner (GP) shortly after arrival. A GP will act as your primary point of contact for accessing healthcare services.
