Due to the ongoing global restrictions regarding COVID-19 pandemic, the academic programs offered by the European Public Law Organization (EPLO) were organized this year in an online mode.
Through the scholarship provided by the International and Regional Studies Institute based on the ongoing cooperation with the EPLO for three years, six Faculty of Law students participated in the variety of EPLO academic programs also this year. From those, law student Anna Kecskés, and the two Ph.D students, Beya Amouri and Mawad Shady took part in the Migration Summer School program. Additionally, three Ph.D students, Jarmo Gombos, Ferdous Rahmani and Yasin Tokat attended in the Academy of European Law program.
Migration Summer School Program
The program organized between 20-25 July 2020 provided a comprehensive knowledge on the recent developments and challenges faced by migrants with a main focus on integration and social exclusion of migrants and refugees. Selected professionals who are expert on the migration studies together with its intersection topics such as law, medicine, sociology, and psychology delivered their presentations. These presentations reinforce the students’ understanding the current topics related to integration of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees in Europe. Besides the theoretical and practical understanding of the issues and challenges regarding migration, the need for a growing awareness that could lead for a global discussion, as well as policies combating social exclusion in Europe was highlighted. It also emphasized the current legislative, bureaucratic and administrative challenges in relation to migration and refugee policies. The courses were supported with the real life stories on the victims of human trafficking and child labor that are the problems regarding illegal migration and helped the audiences to understand the situation clearly.
Academy of European Public Law
The three weeks Academy sessions organized from the August 24 to September 10, 2020 and was divided into two sessions in which the first session focused on the right to private and family life in light of case law of the European Court of Human Rights where the other one focused on the discussions about the term “public interest” and its place in public law. Outside of the ordinary sessions, two guest lecturers delivered their presentations related to the main topics such as the public interest and public intervention in the economy from the energy sector point of view. New challenges brought by technology, especially considering the personal data and the use of data for commercial purposes by large social media companies were also discussed by the guest lecturers’ session.
