Invitation to the "Crossing Lines – or the Significance of Borders" Conference

The International and Regional Studies Institute of the University of Szeged’s Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, and the European Public Law Organization cordially invite you to the conference titled Crossing Lines – or the Significance of Borders (9 June 2023)

Master’s Students, PhD students, as well as young researchers from all around the world are encouraged to attend the joint conference organized by IRSI and EPLO, which is set to take place over two days on 8-9 June 2023, exclusively in person, in Szeged, Hungary.

Subject

In the past three years, two border crossings have plunged Europe into crisis: one was the spread of the novel coronavirus disease, which caused chaos and disruption across national borders. The other is the Russia-Ukraine war that broke out a year ago, where the Russians, in violation of several international treaties, invaded Ukraine, establishing new border lines that are still not recognized by the international community.

Key Topics

The conference’s core focus is the question of borders, boundaries, legal regulation, and legitimacy. As a result, we welcome abstracts on the following topics:

  • the state-theoretical, legal, historical, and cultural aspects of the border as a concept;
  • the legal regulation, jurisprudence, and international legal relevance of the border;
  • the role of the border in international relations (politics, migration, trade);
  • the role of the border in a globalized world and in the EU (Schengen);
  • and the relationship between border and digitalization.

Application

Begin by filling in the abstract submission form here. The deadline for submission is 15 May 2023.

The organizers accept broad interpretations of the topics, and therefore invite everyone to submit quality abstracts (1200-1500 characters with references) in their areas of interest. Please be aware that submitting an abstract does not guarantee participation; the abstract must be reviewed and accepted by the organizers.

An email from lawschool@szte.hu will serve as confirmation of a successful abstract submission. The outcome of the selection process will be communicated to authors via email by 16 May 2023.

Conference Program

Participants will be given the chance to present their research findings in the form of panel presentations, with each presenter having 25 minutes. There are 15 minutes allotted for the presentation and 10 minutes for Q&A and discussion.

A more thorough program will be provided and communicated to attendees closer to the conference date.

Please keep in mind that since there is no registration fee, the organizers will not cover any travel, lodging, or other expenses.

Thank you for submitting!

The event is carried out with the support (IX-SZ/ID/513/2/2022) of the programs of the Hungarian Ministry of Justice enhancing the standards of legal education.
