Christiana Markert, Deputy Head of Mission visited our Faculty

A Candid Discussion with Ms. Christiana Markert, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy

Ms. Christiana Markert, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy, visited our Faculty on March 31. As part of her visit, participants gathered in the Aula of our main building for an informal discussion moderated by Dr. habil. Anikó Szalai, Head of Institute.

During the discussion, Ms. Markert spoke candidly about the highs and lows of German-Hungarian diplomatic relations in recent years. She emphasized the close historical, cultural, and economic ties between the two countries, highlighting that German companies appreciate having a presence in Hungary. At the same time, she pointed out that Germany’s bilateral foreign policy with European countries is always aligned with the European Union’s broader policies. This has been one of the key areas that has presented growing and complex challenges in recent years.

She also reflected on Germany’s naivety and lack of foresight during the 2015 migration crisis, acknowledging that they should have paid more attention to the warnings of Eastern and Southern European states. Additionally, she discussed how Germany adjusted its defense policy following Russia’s aggression against Ukraine in 2022 and how these changes were received by German society.

What made the discussion particularly engaging was the opportunity for participants—primarily university students—to ask questions about Ms. Markert’s career and personal experiences. She shared insights into her 35-year diplomatic journey, the realities of a diplomat’s workload, the reasons behind her career choice, and even offered a few negotiation techniques.
