Exploring AI and Human Rights: Our Faculty at the Global Conference in Ljubljana

Four of our faculty members participated in the Global Conference on AI and Human Rights, which had a special focus on AI and the right to life, organized by the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana on 13-14 June 2024.

The conference hosted about 250 participants, including 70 speakers and 25 poster presentations all focusing on various applications of AI systems that pose risks to human rights, and their various legal considerations.

All of our faculty members were also speakers at the event. They contributed with their presentations focusing on different aspects falling under their respective areas of expertise. Dr. Anikó Szalai gave a presentation on online hate speech in times of armed conflict from the perspective of balancing human rights with the help of AI. Dr. Orsolya Johanna Sziebig focused on environmental rights and AI with a specific approach on how AI helps or hints in building green democracies. Dr. Gizem Gültekin-Várkonyi, together with her engineering colleague from the Jozef Stefan Institute of the University of Ljubljana, presented a research topic on the application of AI law and facial recognition technologies. Finally, Mengxhuan Chen, our faculty Ph.D. student, presented her previous observations from Europe on the issues of protecting dignity in robocare for the elderly.

The conference was a unique opportunity to bring together experts in the field, fostering a collaborative environment for the exchange of innovative ideas and insights. It also provided an invaluable platform for networking, enabling participants to build meaningful connections and explore potential partnerships for future projects.

Participation of Anikó Szalai and Orsolya Johanna Sziebig were supported by the ICT and Societal Challenges Competence Centre of the Humanities and Social Sciences Cluster of the Centre of Excellence for Interdisciplinary Research, Development and Innovation of the University of Szeged. Participation of Gizem Gültekin-Várkonyi was supported by the International and Regional Studies Insitute of the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences of the University of Szeged.
