On the 22nd of March 2017, Mr. Roy Lee (LLB Hons, University of Wellington), who is presently working as a legislative counsel in the Law Officers' Chambers in Guernsey (Channel Islands, United Kingdom), gave a MIRACLE (Master in International Relations Academic Lecture Series) lecture on Upgrading Democracy, Good Laws and Soft Laws.
As a legislative consultant to UNICEF, the IMF, the World Bank, the European Commission and UNDP, Mr. Lee has drafted legislation, advised Government and statutory bodies in Australia, New Zealand, Guernsey, Guyana, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, the Cook Islands and Kiribati for over 25 years.
In his lecture, Mr. Lee discussed useful benchmarks for democracies and critical roles of design and safety standards for laws. He also emphasized the importance of promoting 'soft law’ mechanisms and institutions to upgrade democracies.
In reference to President Trump's 'travel ban' on the nationals of 7 Islamic countries (which was presented as a case study), the lecture concluded with a lively discussion between Mr. Lee and the invitees from different study fields.
