On 3 July 2017, the organization in charge of the unification of international economic and commercial law, the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) voted Prof. Dr. János Martonyi, Hungary’s former minister of foreign affairs, the founder and currently professor emeritus of the Department of Private International Law of the University of Szeged, into its chair.
The UNCITRAL fosters the approximation of international commercial law through the adoption of international treaties, model laws, legislative guides and recommendations. It worked out, among others, the Vienna Sales Convention (United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, Vienna, 1980) and the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration.
